Mastering

The last step before release: translation, dynamics and formats that stay consistent on speakers, earbuds and platforms.

Mastering engineer listening critically on large speakers in a treated room.

Mastering follows mixing. Where the mix places each instrument, mastering makes the song work as a whole in level, tone and space — and prepares files for common streaming requirements without crushing your mix.

In our Amsterdam suite, Sophie Bakker listens on midfield monitors in a dedicated treated room at Namdazivo. You can supply a stereo mix from anywhere, or continue straight after mixing in the same building. For headroom and file specs, see mixing file formats.

Process

  1. 01

    Check

You send a mix without a master-bus limiter, plus references and target formats. We verify tech and scope.

  2. 02

    Master

EQ, dynamics, stereo width and loudness align with distribution (streaming, download, vinyl prep on request).

  3. 03

    Proof

You receive a proof master to check at home. Up to 2 revision rounds for level or tonal tweaks are included.

  4. 04

    Release files

After approval: 24-bit WAV, optional 320 kbps MP3 and DDP on request. Files kept 12 months.

When you need mastering

Any mix heading to Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp or radio benefits from a master checked on multiple systems. Even strong mixes sometimes need subtle tonal balance or controlled final loudness.

Mastering does not fix tracking or mix problems: harsh vocals, out-of-phase bass or crowded mids belong in mixing. If unsure, send a mix for a short intake via contact.

Who it is for

Independent artists with a single, labels releasing an EP, podcast music producers, and bands that tracked at band recording and want mastering after an external mix. Minimum age for solo bookings: 16; younger artists with a parent or guardian by arrangement.

Speech-only podcast files rarely need a music-style master; for dialogue see podcast recording.

What to supply

Stereo mix WAV, 24-bit, 44.1 or 48 kHz, with 3–6 dB headroom on peaks — no brickwall limiter on the bus. Note ISRC wishes, EP/album track order and two references with realistic loudness (not clipped masters).

Albums work best as one package so we can match level and tone between songs. Technical detail lives in the file guide.

Workflow and loudness

We do not force one LUFS number on every genre. We do account for platform normalization so your track does not drop in level after upload. Dynamics stay where the music allows; heavy limiting is not our default.

Each song is checked on monitors, a second pair and consumer headphones. Album work compares tracks so the release feels cohesive.

Revisions

Track, EP or album pricing includes 2 rounds on the proof master. Batch feedback: a little more presence in the chorus, slightly less low-end on small speakers.

Structural mix changes sit outside mastering and need a new mix export. After sign-off we only adjust metadata or formats without a new round when trivial.

Delivery formats

Default: 24/44.1 or 24/48 WAV as agreed. 320 kbps MP3 for promo on request. DDP for CD pressing by arrangement. We name files to your track list.

Secure download link. Keep your copy locally; after 12 months we delete server copies unless extended. See privacy policy and terms.

Mix → master chain at Namdazivo

Mix and master under one roof reduces miscommunication: the engineer knows mix notes and can ask questions without long email threads. After mixing you do not relabel files for internal handoff.

Externally mixed projects are welcome. Supply the final mix bus without dither or conversions that add artifacts. We discuss vocal or tracking quality honestly before starting.

Frequently asked questions

How much headroom should my mix have?

Aim for 3–6 dB before clipping on the stereo bus, without a limiter. Peaks around -6 dBFS are common. See the file guide.

Do you master stems instead of stereo?

Default is stereo mix. Stem mastering is a separate workflow; mention it at intake if you need bus-level control.

Can I get a vinyl master?

Vinyl-specific masters on request and extra fee, depending on cutting specs from your plant.

How fast is turnaround?

A single usually takes three to five business days after a solid mix arrives. Albums are blocked in the calendar; state deadlines at contact.

What if I change my mix after mastering?

That counts as a new mix and a new master at the current rate. Submit a final mix export first.
